Painting the Light

My journey as an artist began when I was ten years old, with oil paints, landscapes, and the discovery that an empty surface could become another world. Some of my earliest memories are of watching my grandfather sketch boats. Seeing a few lines turn into something recognizable—something with a story—felt like magic.

As I grew older, creativity found its way into everything I did. I painted community signs, festival displays, kiosks, landscapes, and anything else that gave me a reason to make something. Art became more than a practice; it became part of how I understood the world.

Finding Freedom Through Art

My life eventually took a dramatically different direction, and I found myself serving a life sentence at San Quentin State Prison. In a place defined by concrete, steel, rules, and confinement, painting became peace, therapy, and a way for my mind to travel when I could not.

Somewhere in that journey, the moon began to appear. One of the first moons I painted was above a locker in a small prison cell. The image was simple, but what it represented was much larger: imagination, possibility, resilience, and the belief that even when your physical world becomes small, your mind does not have to become small with it.

The Moon Man

Through rehabilitative programs, other artists, music, service, community, and years of personal growth, creativity became part of a larger transformation. The Moons of Wisdom mural on Donner Unit at San Quentin remains one of the most meaningful works from that chapter.

Moon Man Paints grew from that experience. The work moves between the natural world and the imagined one—forests, flowers, oceans, landscapes, moons, stars, galaxies, and places somewhere between reality and fantasy. Nature gives me the starting point. Imagination takes me somewhere else.

Art Without Walls

Each piece carries part of the road that brought me here: difficult chapters, beautiful ones, mistakes, lessons, healing, and the belief that creativity can survive almost anything.

I make art to create light when the world feels dark, to find beauty in unexpected places, and to remind people that another world is always waiting inside the imagination.

Dream. Create. Inspire.
